About the Laboratory

The LOC (Waves and Currents Laboratory) is part of the Ocean Engineering Program (PeNO) at COPPE/UFRJ.

The LOC facilities are primarily used for research and teaching activities related to undergraduate and graduate courses in Naval and Ocean Engineering. LOC's Researchers and Technicians develop various partnerships with the industrial and service sectors.

The laboratory is coordinated by Professor Joel Sena Sales Junior, from the Hydrodynamics area of the Department of Naval and Ocean Engineering at POLI/UFRJ.

The scientific coordination is carried out by Prof. Antonio Carlos Fernandes, Volunteer Professor of the Ocean Engineering Program at COPPE/UFRJ.

The Laboratory is equipped to tackle different challenges in the offshore industry and energy transition, developing solutions for a wide range of problems in Ocean Engineering in the following Research Areas:

• Development and analysis of renewable energy and decarbonization devices;
• Small-scale experimental testing and numerical modeling of floating structures with or without anchoring;
• Small-scale experimental testing and numerical modeling of subsea systems;
• Experimental testing and development of autonomous systems (vessels and submarines);
• Modeling of various environmental conditions;
